Last night, despite opposition from thousands of residents, Merton Labour councillors voted to permit huge development by the All England club on land akin to the green belt.

By ignoring the harm that the council themselves accept this will do to land and heritage, they have set a dangerous precedent that could affect open spaces in Merton and beyond.

It’s time for Labour Merton to come clean on how it will act with regard to the covenants that should protect this land.

We now urge Wandsworth Council to succeed where Merton has failed and reject this application. It’s not too late for the All England to work with residents to develop proposals that do not unnecessarily damage our landscape and environment.
